SWEETWATER COUNTY — Despite a cold, wet morning nearly 70 runners and walkers bundled up on Saturday for the annual “Run with the Badges” 5K/10K.  The race, a benefit for Sweetwater County Family Justice Center, a program of YWCA, was held in partnership with Rock Springs Police Department Police Protective Association, Green River Police Department Fraternal Order of Police, Sweetwater County Sheriff and Wyoming Highway Patrol Association.  The primary goal of the event is to bring awareness of sexual assault and domestic violence and show support for the victims.

The race, in its third year, began in 2014 as organizers wanted to host a run in April, which is nationally recognized as Sexual Assault Awareness Month.  Last year, Rock Springs and Green River Police Departments joined in and this year Sweetwater County Sheriff’s Department and Wyoming Highway Patrol. “We are so appreciative of the support we have received in the past, and this year, not only for the race, but the partnerships we have at Sweetwater County Family Justice Center to help victims of all forms of family violence”.  Stated Aimee Gatzke, FJC Program Director.  “It was wonderful to have participants of all abilities, ages, and backgrounds coming together with our local law enforcement agencies to show support, and bring awareness of these heinous crimes.”

Sweetwater County Family Justice Center provides advocacy, support, and referral to victims of all forms of family violence. The Center is located at 725 “C” Street in Rock Springs and works closely with agencies throughout the community and state to help victims and their families.
